Agriculture, Environment and Food Security
A more sustainable agriculture is one of the major challenges facing the world in the near term. In addition to the impact of climate change and environmental degradation, a fast rising global population is another source of pressure.World population is indeed expected to reach around 9 billion by 2050.This is particularly true for Africa where building sustainable agricultural systems remains a challenge, notably in order to improve food security. At the same time, the continent gathers more than half of the world uncultivated arable land and a huge potential to increase crop yield.
The impact of climate change on agriculture, water stress, environmental degradation, the role of irrigation and innovation in increasing productivity, the specific challenges facing agriculture in dry-lands, access to finance are among the key topics of this program.
The sustainable agriculture program relies on a global approach to tackle these issues. It aims to foster a better understanding and stimulates debates, with a special focus on developing countries, Africa and the South Atlantic.
The overarching objective is to raise awareness and offer concrete ideas and evidence to policy makers and to the private sector on means to develop sustainable agriculture, to increase food security and promote a more efficient use of land and a better distribution of its output.
