How Sustainable Energy can drive Prosperity?

Marrakech , Morocco

The COP21 has put a great emphasis on the need for mitigation and foremost adaptation to climate change. Next to the political commitment of all countries to reduce carbon emissions, an aspect may have been neglected: the role of energy for prosperity. All countries, among which developing and emerging countries, are engaged in implementing the production and use of sustainable energy. Decarbonizing Electricity Systems: Progress Made and Challenges Ahead

Marrakech , Morocco

Climate goals agreed in Paris at COP21 can only be reached if a strong focus is put on the promotion of low-carbon electricity sources. Electricity generation is already the largest contributor to energy-related CO2 emissions and global demand for electricity is set to increase by another 40% to 2030. Despite encouraging signs such as record investment in renewables last year and falling costs for key technologies such as storage, the road to full decarbonization of electricity systems is still long and full of challenges.

Low Carbon Renewable Energy: Lessons from MENA and Latin America Regions

Marrakech , Morocco

The success of the Paris Agreement is dependent on both the effective implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions, and the increasing ambition of contributions in line with the need for decarbonization of the global economy. Toward this end, countries of the Latin American and Middle East and North African regions have achieved significant deployment of renewable energy, and have ambitious goals for additional deployment. Such achievements have provided these countries with experience in the large-scale deployment of renewable energy. This experience can inform the pathways forward and implementation approaches being adopted as these countries pursue their ambitious goals for additional deployment. Sharing this experience is of great importance as countries continue to look to renewable energy as a means of achieving the necessary decarbonization of energy systems.
